Bärenfalle
Bärenfalle
"bear trap" in German

And a Bear trap this off road adventure, for me it has become!

As alot of you know "The Rental" 4502 is dead and at rest......I have been in a quandry as to weather I would actually start another project or not. But as usual the sickness, building and abusing offroad equipment, has prevailed. My mind and hands can sit Idol no longer....the drive to build yet another VERY Different tool of speed and off road prowess is at hand!!!

So true to form.........I will not nor canot follow the mold of normality....hense forge forward in a most difficult and ultimately frustrating adventure of fitment, geometry and dilemma of packaging debate.

I introduce Project Bärenfalle, The Bear Trap. As of yet a class in racing yet to be determined but a wheeler at the top of my mind......ultimately she should fall in 4800 class Ultra 4 but.....simply put I want to get out with all my friends again and enjoy why I do what I do!!!

The beginning:

Fiberglass front clip(Baja Bug one piece)
Fiberglass rear valance(Baja Bug)
LSX Iron Block 408
Art Carr Turbo 400
Atlas 3.0-1
Ford 9" hybrid axles filled with Yukon awesomeness!
37" tires
King shocks n bumps

The rest is TBD at the moment!!

RE: Bärenfalle
Looks sweet! I have always wanted to do a build out of A bug, I will be following this thread closely to get some ideas for when I can afford to build mine. I imagine mine will be not nearly as spectacular as this one looks like it will be, but I will try, lol. One question, are building a frame for under the uni-body or are you just going to implant one? If implanting one, what do you plan on going with? I have done a bit of research and have found that the yj frames are close to a match with only about a 3" shorter wheel base than the Bug's wheel base.
JEEP... an amazing blend of adventurers without limits, a willing ness to help without want and a mutual respect shown by a wave. People who become more than friends, they and peers and influences and we call them family. There is a bond through or stories, laughs, and tears. I live, I ride. I am!!   O lllllll O

RE: Bärenfalle
For my thoughts I just couldn't justify using a frame transplant with the amounts of modifications needed to suit what my end goal is.

That said, taking a lesson from a friend/fellow racer Gerald Lee and his co builder John Currie I descided to go with a main frame built from 2x3 .188 with a floor structure out of square 1.5 .188 as well. If anyone can argue the ease of affixing...well anything to square I know I couldn't....LOLOL

Alot of great builders, better than I, have used this meathod for a while!!

After the main is done then the basement, mid and upper structure will be 1.75", 1.5" and a small amount of 1" .120 DOM

Here is a blueprint of the VW floor pan and that gives a general direction for the perimeter of the main level plan. From that I will add forward stringers at approx 22" center to center and rear stringers with an 9" step up at approxamittly 25" center to center(all best guesses at his point but I will document for sharing later)

Ultimately i want a very Desert racing Baja Bug stance on a solid axle platform......but here are a few of my inspirations for this project............there are thousands more...LOLOL
Remember guys I started way back in 1987-88 with a 1968 super beetle that I spent every waking hour and blood earned penny to build......so this 1968 is VERY special for me. I hope you all enjoy the build and I cannot wait to get her out!!!

RE: Bärenfalle
Oh the cam is custom grind from mah buddy in Idaho along with his tune(VooDoo injection), the torque converter is an A1 with 24-2500 stall at the moment that should work great with the cam......look at umm somewhere between the specs of 272 or the 281 HR ish ...LOL

Gonna run her a little like the 6liter that I am selling cam wise but more cubes so it will be somewhat subdued due to the additional 30+ cubes on tap.

Don't want her too too hot because I really want to enjoy wheeling her at home and elsewhere!!

Yes sir they pay little attention to the intake runner other than in the guide and bowl area and a casting clean up........most of the love is shown to the exhaust port!!! Wink

Them are going to flow like a champ through the full rpm range with the bowl and valve guide work ,what kinda cfm thay poke out the exhaust port too?

Im thinking of sticking with cathedral port heads might go to the 243/799 for the .5 jump in compression or keep 317 heads and convince my self I need a tvs 1900 blower Cool
