Wink  Suprise
Ok starting a build thread because I am starting to get parts together for a build it might take some time but I will try to document everything as best as I can.  I wanted to just fix my little Comanche up and keep it rolling with a few upgrades, now its just going to get a clean up and keep it how it is. The chassis is something that was torn down in disbelief because it was such a well rounded rig, I had to keep it in the club when the offer came up to get it. That would be the HMFI's goat I think it would be safe to say everyone in the club has been on a trail with it and knows it. I dont know if I will ever be able to return it to its former glory but I will return it to the trails in time. The build will be rather slow because I am also in the process of building a cabin/house also in my spare time.
So far searching for parts to get everything together in one spot or at least get it rolling so I can take it to build in Sexsmith in my brothers shop because it will fit in it with tires on.
I have the axles for the front and rear, they are ford axles out of a 3/4 ton of the 1990 vintage. Monkeydance-1

I will post pictures of the progress and parts that have been acquired, cleaned up, serviced and put on.

STAY TUNED  Dmonkey

RE: Suprise
Stripped down the diff and under further inspection found the gear ratio to be the highest possible one you can get with this axle combo 3.54 so after contemplating the universe and such I am going to keep it a 3.54 for now and put money into a doubler when the time comes for the transfer case. The carrier will get tossed and will get either a true track or a detroit haven't made the final decision on that yet. So it will sit like this for a couple days waiting for parts to come in.

RE: Suprise
Yeah its still pretty mint especially whats left on it, my other one isnt too bad either but this one will be better!

*edit*
On a side note with our dollar like crap trying to locate parts is a tough go... true trac from one supplier (the most expensive) to napa was 1800 bucks from summit racing its 550 usd and thats still cheaper shipped and with the exchange rate. Might be building from summit parts, nice thing about that is usually ships in 5 working days. I will give the local guys a few more days to find something more affordable.

RE: Suprise
I would recommend Brink Fab out of Sylvan Lake for parts, but he is on the Lake Bed right now for King of the Hammers.
I know you've thought long and hard about the gear ratio, but I would really reconsider. Start your build at the axles, if you have the right gears, then you won't need a doubler. Especially if you are buying a locker, you want to get over the 4:10 hump, because most are different and if you want to gear down later, you need to buy new lockers.

RE: Suprise
For the fords they are all same for the Sterling axles. From 3.54 all the way up to 7.08 or something crazy, higher numerical gear ratio on the 10.25 the weaker the ring and pinion. Its cheaper to re gear the axle after than add a doubler after then change all the drive shaft lengths later. And I have spare 3.54 Dana 50 and sterlings in the yard if I need to rob parts. I got my heart set on a doubler though.

RE: Suprise
I ordered a rebuild kit and a trac loc for the axle from our local off road parts supplier Tony. So now its a waiting game for parts so I can get everything back in the axle before I buff it up and paint it.

RE: Suprise
Here is a well needed update to the site. I got the lock rite but it wouldn't fit in a limited slip carrier soo I had to track one down but luckily it wasn't too far away.  So here are some pics of some progress for today. Need to order a pinion bearing set so i will wait on that.
